Olivia May Kemp (Livy) es la hija de mi amiga Claire. Tan sólo cuenta con 5 añitos y ha sido diagnosticada con Neuroblastoma (un tipo de cáncer que por lo general, se presenta en bebés y niños). En estos momentos, va por la tercera ronda de Quimio y todavía le quedan tres más según el plan actual. Cada ronda empieza con una infusión de medicamentos por vía intravenosa durante 5 días seguidos. Como resultado, sus glóbulos rojos bajarán notoriamente durante el transcurso de los 10 días siguientes y sufrirá Neutropenia (recuento bajo de glóbulos blancos) por otros 10 días donde éstos tendrán que volver a equilibrarse a tiempo para la siguiente ronda. Para Navidad, esperan que el tumor en su pulmón derecho haya encogido y que las 'ramificaciones' que éste tiene extendiéndose por la columna vertebral, hayan desaparecido. Si todo sale bien, Livy será operada y tendrá Radioterapia por tres semanas, por la que tendrá que estar sometida a anestesia general todos los días, de Lunes a Viernes. Luego tendrá que pasar otra vez por quirófano para remover el catéter de Hickman y tendrá que estar sometida a 6 meses de antibióticos. Como madre, esta historia es abrumadura. A veces, sólo nos damos cuenta de que estas cosas realmente suceden cuando alguien cercano está pasando por ello. Que ésto le esté sucediendo a una niña tan pequeña y adorable como Livy, me hace pensar lo increíblemente valiente que es en estas circunstancias tan difíciles. Le estoy agradecida a esta niña tan especial por haber abierto mis ojos. Livy es extraordinaria y es todo un ejemplo a seguir por su enorme fuerza y vitalidad. A pesar de todo, su sonrisa nunca la abandona... Livy, lo estás haciendo genial. Sigue así! At the moment, she is currently going through round 3 of Chemo and she will have to have 3 more rounds in the current plan. Each round starting with 5 days worth of drug infusion. As a consequence, her blood count slides down for 10 days and will become neutropenic (an abnormal low number of white blood cells) for about another 10 days while her blood counts balance back up before she returns for more chemo. By Christmas the oncologists hope the tumour pressing on her right lung will have shrunk and that the 'fingers' of this tumour spreading to Livy's spinal chord will have disappeared. All being well, she will have surgery followed by a minimum of 3 weeks of radiotherapy- where she will potentially be under general anaesthetic every day, Monday to Friday. She will then have more surgery to remove her Hickman line followed by 6 months worth of antibiotics. As a parent this story is so overwhelming... Sometimes it's only when it's somebody close to you, that you realise these things really happen. For this to happen to a child as young and precious as Livy makes me think how brave she is while being faced with such difficult circumstances. I'm thankful to have had my eyes opened through this special girl. She is an extraordinary kid that sets an amazing example with her enormous strength and vitality. This is a girl that has a smile that never abandons her beautiful face. Livy, you are doing great. Keep it up!!
